I always find it insightful to hear artists discuss their paths and the obstacles they have overcome. At the Gallery West, alumni artist talk, there was an eclectic group of artists, from age, educational background, and art medium. Although all of their milestones varied, they all shared one commonality, Suffolk County Community College happened to be the starting point of their careers.

Five artists; Jen, a photographer, currently working at a silkscreen shop and a working artist, Liz, a photographer and painter, working professionally in education management, Martina; a photographer and neon, currently working as a bartender, Grace; a high school teacher and a multi-media artist, and Mickey a photographer, working at a gallery.

Each artist appreciates their experiences at SCCC for the invaluable resources; library, printers, and incomparable professors; for their ability to hone their craft and to receive the guidance of photographers in the industry, and lastly to be surrounded by like-minded individuals fully engulfed in the art of photography.

In the photography industry talent is necessary to advance one's career. However, the panelist of artist advised extra actions that should be considered.

1. The importance of networking
2.  Joining local art associations
3.  Kindness is essential
4. Have a precise vision of what you want to achieve in the field

The advice shared by all artists was beneficial because I believe it takes a village to make a career prolific.
